Shock! Police Say No Suspicious Circumstances in Death of Footballer Maddy Cusack

The 27-year-old athlete passed away on Wednesday, and her death was described as “heartbreaking news,” prompting tributes from Blades players and FA Women’s Football.

Derbyshire Police said on Monday that she had been pronounced dead at a property in Horsley, but her death is not being treated as suspicious.

A spokesperson for the force said: “We were called to an address in Lady Lea Road, Horsley, just after 6.35 pm on Wednesday, September 20.

“A 20-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her family is informed and is being supported by specialist officers.

“Her death is not being treated as suspicious, and a file is being prepared for the coroner.”

A spokesperson for Chesterfield Coroner’s Court confirmed that notification of the death had been received, and an investigation would commence in due course.

Cusack, who also worked in the club’s commercial department, was the longest-serving female player at the Blades and was the first to reach 100 appearances.

Before Sheffield United’s Premier League match against Newcastle United on Sunday at Bramall Lane, a tribute was paid to the midfielder.

This included a minute’s silence before kick-off, during which players wore shirts bearing Cusack’s squad number, eight. Fans held up signs and flags, while the club’s flag at Bramall Lane was flown at half-mast.

Stephen Bettis, Sheffield United’s Chief Executive, said last week in a statement: “The news from Bramall Lane is heartbreaking for everyone. Maddy’s position at Sheffield United, within several departments, made her unique and popular with all those she came into contact with.

“Her personality and professionalism brought credit to her and we are devastated that her loss will be felt deeply. In the coming days and as we move forward, the club will support Maddy’s family, friends, teammates, and colleagues in any way we can.”

Director of Women’s Football at The FA, Baroness Sue Campbell, said: “We are all shocked to hear about Maddy Cusack’s passing. From The FA, The Lionesses, Women’s Super League, and Women’s Championship, our thoughts and deep condolences are with Maddy’s family, friends, teammates, and everyone at Sheffield United.

“Maddy represented England at age group level and we will pay our respects at the appropriate time. We are in contact with the club and will continue to offer our full support during this incredibly sad time.”
